Our Story

Open the Text exists because the Bible can be read, tested, and trusted on its own terms.

This is a place to open the text, examine the context, and keep what Scripture actually says—no more, and no less.

Why Open the Text

When people leave a high-demand religion, the easy work is tearing down what they left. The harder work is building something true.

Open the Text was born from that second desire. The name is the method: open the text, examine its context, and test every claim against what it actually says. We will not let later creeds, councils, or organizational systems tell the Bible what it is allowed to mean. We read the 66 books of Scripture as one story, in their own historical and literary setting, and we let later Scripture interpret earlier Scripture without erasing what God first said.

Raised in tradition, driven by the text

From the age of five, my life was shaped inside Jehovah’s Witnesses. I was baptized at eighteen, trained through Pioneer School, and spent countless hours going door to door with what I believed was the truth.

The more I read the Bible for myself, the harder it became to reconcile that system with the text. Doctrines such as an invisible presence of Jesus in 1914, being barred from the Lord’s Supper, and defining Jesus as an archangel rather than the human Davidic Messiah created real biblical friction. Around the age of twenty, I stepped away.

I left an organization. I did not leave the Creator, and I did not leave Jesus.

Years in the wilderness

Leaving an insular religious world often leaves a void. Many walk away from God altogether. I did not. For years I lived in a theological desert, sure of a few things the text would not let me surrender:

There is one God, the Father, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Jesus of Nazareth is his Son, the promised human Messiah from David’s line, crucified, bodily raised, exalted, and returning.
The biblical hope is not escape from the earth, but resurrection, judgment, and the restoration of God’s creation.

Almost every tradition I met taught something else: a triune God, a Christ who is not truly a man, or a hope that leaves the world behind. I often asked whether anyone else could see what the Scriptures actually say.

Peace did not come from finding a new authority to replace the old one. It came from staying with the text until the storyline was clear: creation, covenant, Israel, Messiah, the apostolic gospel, and the restored earth. I am not the first person to read the Bible that way. I am responsible to keep reading it that way in public, with care.

How the work is done

Open the Text is not a content mill, and it is not a protest channel. Every published study is meant to survive a slow reading of the passage.

We begin with the primary text in its own setting—speaker, audience, genre, and the words on the page. We then trace only the connections Scripture itself supports. Claims are separated from inferences. Silences stay silences. Covenant promises keep their named recipients. Israel is not replaced. Jesus is not redescribed in later philosophical formulas. The gospel is not reduced to a private inner event, and the hope is not relocated to a disembodied heaven.

Nothing is treated as finished because it sounds familiar. An article is ready when the argument can be tested in an ordinary Bible, the citations carry the weight placed on them, and the next reader can tell the difference between what the text says and what we have not been given.

That is why the teaching is cumulative. Restoring the Foundations walks the Bible’s story from beginning to end in fourteen articles, each building on the ones before it. The articles are published one at a time, in order.

What we are building

Restore the foundations. Trace the Bible’s single story from the one God and his good creation, through the covenants with Abraham, Israel, and David, to Jesus the Messiah, the apostolic gospel, and the coming restoration of all things.

Let Scripture speak plainly. Read historically and grammatically. Test every conclusion in context. Do not import creeds, commentaries, or organizational tradition as if they were the text.

Offer a harbor. Provide clear, testable teaching for people leaving high-control religion, sitting in traditional churches, or opening the Bible for the first time—without sectarian control, and without asking anyone to stop checking the work.

You are welcome here

If you come from a Jehovah’s Witness background, a creedal church, or no church at all, there is room to read with care.

Open the text. Test the claim. Keep what is true.
